Understanding the journey isn't enough

Any big decision will inevitably require tradeoffs. Recognizing that your life is an ongoing journey provides perspective but not answers about what to compromise. For that, you need to know the why behind your choice.

It's natural to focus on what you want and how you're going to get it, and both are necessary considerations. But knowing what you want doesn't tell you why it matters to you, and knowing how to get it doesn't tell you whether it's worth pursuing.

Understanding your reasons requires looking beneath the decision itself. What we want is shaped over time by our experiences and the world around us, sometimes in ways we don't recognize. Some things we want reflect what genuinely matters to us, while others come from assumptions we've carried for so long that we've stopped questioning them.

Asking why gives you a way to sort through how you’ve been influenced. It means considering what you value, where those values came from, what you're willing to trade for them, and whether the choices you're weighing actually reflect the person you want to become.

Sometimes the things you value will compete with one another. A worthwhile opportunity may require giving up something else you also care about. A choice can be right for one part of your life while creating difficulty in another. There isn't always a solution that gives you everything you want without asking something in return.

It's impossible to eliminate uncertainty before you act. The best you can do is understand your reasons, recognize the tradeoffs, and make a decision you can take responsibility for.

I'm Joe Lerro, the founder of Hero's Mind Academy. I'm also a husband and father, which means I need to be someone my family can rely on for strength and guidance. I've come to understand that I can't fulfill that responsibility without continuing to develop myself. Whatever your responsibilities, the same is true for you. I created Hero's Mind Academy to help other men undertake that work for themselves and become better equipped for whatever their lives require of them.
