A life takes shape one choice at a time
You didn't choose every circumstance that brought you to this point in your life. But you have made choices along the way. Some were significant and others seemed ordinary. Either way, one decision led to another until you gradually arrived at the life you're living now.
In retrospect, you probably made some bad decisions along the way, while others were exactly what the situation called for. But the fact remains that all of them were made by an earlier version of you facing an earlier version of your life.
Time has passed since then. Your experiences have changed the way you see things, and what matters to you now may be different than it was.
Even so, you don't reevaluate past decisions every day. We couldn't function if we constantly reconsidered everything we've done. We live demanding lives where much of our attention is dedicated to today's responsibilities.
Some parts of our lives become familiar, which is a good thing when that familiarity provides healthy stability and structure. But not everything that becomes routine still belongs in your life. Something that once made sense can become a holdover from your past. You continue to grow as life moves along and circumstances change.
The longer something remains part of your life, the easier it becomes to accept it as simply the way things are. More of your life continues to build around what’s already in place, and making adjustments can become more difficult as your responsibilities and commitments evolve.
There may be very good reasons to continue on the path you're already on. But there’s a difference between deciding to continue because you've examined that path and still believe in where it leads and continuing only because you've grown accustomed to it.
Deliberate living begins with recognizing that distinction. It requires an awareness of the direction your choices have created and a willingness to examine whether that direction still reflects the life you want to build.
